Personal Projects

My curiosity has led me to many different places in the area where I live (and elsewhere) looking for specific places and people which have stories and moods that resonate with me.

Over the years my interests and approach kept changing.
I started photography as a job in 2004 mostly covering local events and it was not until 2010 that I realized that I could do it as a means of personal expression and exploration. It was at that time that I became fascinated by “street photography” aesthetics and workflow and under that influence I spent most of my time in Vodnjan (Croatia) roaming the streets. The little town attracted me for the lack of tourists, simple old architecture and its people. I also took many photos in my hometown, Rovinj, capturing the narrow old town streets and the local fishermen.

In 2011 I traveled to Toronto, Canada and participated in the Magnum Photography Workshop.  I was completely overwhelmed by the experience. Working with Magnum photographers, listening to their stories and advice and seeing them at work left a deep mark on me.
My photos of homeless people in Toronto were taken then. I was influenced by the work of my mentor Chen Chi Chang and especially his multimedia and I made several myself.

After I returned home my aesthetics changed and I started using film, 35mm and medium format cameras.

Seldom with a plan or preconception, I visited towns, villages, tourist settlements, caves and natural locations capturing what caught my attention.

For several years, the City of Raša (Croatia), became my main destination.

Raša Mine (2013)

Raša Mine (2013)

The area around the city of Raša is rich in carbon and its extraction was crucial for Mussolini's war machinery in WWII. The mine, once a home for more than ten thousands miners that worked there every day, is now a mystical tunnel inhabited by the rotting remains of...

Prvomajska Factory (2012)

Prvomajska Factory (2012)

The Prvomajska Factory in Raša is an abandoned building that I visited in 2012-2013. The coexistence of devastation, neglect and various objects that has been left there when the factory closed down captured my attention.

Power Plant Vlaška (2012)

Power Plant Vlaška (2012)

Built in 1939, the Power Plant Vlaška is located near the City of Raša and before being closed down it was the main source of electrical power for the city and the Istrian region.I visited the plant on several occasions. Going there with Riko and Marijan was an...

River Raša (2012)

River Raša (2012)

On my way to Raša, instead of going to the town as I always have, I turned left on a gravel road that follows the river Raša to see what can I find. The trip was fascinating and mystical, full of surprises.

In 2011 I participated in a Magnum Workshop in Toronto, Canada. These close up portraits of homeless people were the images that I captured while being there.

Vodnjan Stories (2010-2011)

Vodnjan Stories (2010-2011)

In the early 2010s I was discovering photography as a means for personal exploration and expression. As it usually goes, I was fascinated with the so called street photography and the great masters of photography as Bresson, Ervitt, Pellegrin and many others. Vodnjan...
